100 Years Ago Moruya Examiner 24th January 1920
PONY RACES. – Owners are again reminded that nominations for the Moruya Pony Club’s important big prize day’s racing, which takes place on the 4th proximo, close with Secretary, Mr. J. Hansen, this Saturday. No less a sum than £80 is hung up for distribution, a chance to secure a good stake not to be met with too often.
MORUYA FACTORY. – During November, 1919, 34,309 gallons of milk, equalling 31,702 standard gallons were delivered at the factory. During December 2140 cheese, weighing 30,210 lbs., were shipped to Sydney. The amount paid to suppliers at a rate of 8¾d per standard gallon was £1155 15s 6d.
Q.C. – Following are the successful candidates who sat for the Q.C. exam. Moruya Public School: Phillip Arnett, Gordon Colefax, Albert Louttit, Ellen Parbery, Mervyn Stevens, Ruby Arnett, Bertha Colefax, Louise Fox, Phoebe Knight, Muriel Parbery, Edward Richards, Alan Colefax. St Mary’s Convent, Moruya: - Emma Carden, Dorothy Lynch, John McKeon, Kathleen Brogan.
(Note: QC Exam. The qualifying certificate examination was conducted by the Department of Education and externally set and marked. This examination was designed to mark the completion of the primary school course and select pupils best fitted for further education in high schools.)
FREEZING WORKS. – Mr. H. Waters notifies that he has taken over the Moruya Freezing Works and is prepared to buy rabbits, poultry, etc. He also calls tenders for 50 cords of billet wood.
R.C. SERVICES. – There will be no Mass in this Parish on Sunday, 1st Feb. as the Rev. Fathers McCormack and Bossence will be in conference in Goulburn. Masses will be as usual on 2nd Sunday at Narooma and Bodalla.
HIGH HONORS: - Congratulations to Miss Electra Patricia Rankin, sister of Mr. E. and Miss Jean Rankin, of Kiora, who was successful in attaining her B.A. degree at the Sydney University. This clever young lady received her early tuition under that very capable teacher, Mrs. J. Johnson of Eurobodalla.
BRASS BAND. - Undoubtedly Bateman’s Bay is a live community the residents are always ready to advance the interests and welfare of their town. The latest move is the formation of a brass band which will enliven all public entertainments, as well as increase the spirit in the progressive citizens, as there is nothing which has a more exhilarating effect on one’s nerves than the sound of a good brass band. As instruments will have to be purchased it now behoves the public to assist in a practical way and send in substantial donations.
BODALLA (From our Correspondent)
The Annual Flower Show and Sale of Work to raise funds for the repair of the fence round All Saints Church, Bodalla was held on Thursday, January 15th and was a great success. The flowers, vegetables and industrial work exhibited was of a very high class.
The fortnightly Euchre Tournament and dance was held on Saturday evening last when despite the unfavourable night there was a large attendance. The ladies’ prize a silver photo-frame, was won by Miss R. Bulgaries, after a dead-heat with Mrs Head and Miss M. Marsden. The gent’s prize, half a dozen handkerchiefs, was annexed by Horace Head.

Twenty one 100 years ago booklets containing articles for the years 1899 to 1919 are available ($6 to $8ea) from the Museum. Back copies of local newspapers can be viewed on microfilm at the Society’s Family History Research Library (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Museum in Campbell St. Moruya.
