Shire-wide news extracts from the Moruya Examiner of 16 August 1919, provided by the Moruya & District Historical Society:
AFTER 31 YEARS. – Mr. Robert (Bob) Latta, eldest son of Mr. Wm. Latta, of Bateman’s Bay, after a service of 31 years in the General Post Office, Sydney, has retired on a pension. Bob must have worked the oracle cleverly, as he is only 52 years of age and looks quite a boy yet.
GRAZING RIGHTS. Dairymen and others in want of a good grazing proposition should not fail to attend the sale of the Moruya Park grazing right, which takes place at the “Examiner” Office, on Saturday next, at 2:30 p.m. The Park contains 90 acres of good quality land, substantially enclosed and well watered.
CONVENT BALL. – A meeting was held on Wednesday in the Convent School to make arrangements for the annual ball, the Rev. Father McCormack presiding. The date fixed for holding this popular function was Wednesday, 24th Sept. Misses W. Johnson and McIver were appointed hon. secretaries, Mrs. P. Flynn hon. treasurer and Mesdames J. Heffernan and G. Constable collectors.
ROLL OF HONOR. – A very handsome Roll of Honor, containing 28 names of members of the congregation has been erected in the Presbyterian Church in Moruya. A special service will be held on Sunday, 24th August, at 2.30, when the Honor Roll will be unveiled. Soldiers are asked to attend in uniform.
NO MORE OYSTERS – The apathetic people of Moruya are sitting with their hands in their pockets whilst every yard of their oyster foreshores are being filched from them by a bad Government. Will our townfolk please read the oyster applications in this issue? Right up to the bridge has been applied for!
HOUSE FOR SALE. – Mr. G. H. James advertises in this issue his beautiful house “Lynwood,” with every convenience, for absolute sale. Owing to her medical advisor ordering Mrs. James a change of climate, Mr. James has decided to dispose of his lovely home, as well as a cottage at Gundary.
DEATHS. – On the 3rd instant there died at “Rainbow,” Hoxton Park, Liverpool, Alice Mary, the wife of Mr. William Clough, and daughter of Mrs. W. Collett, senr., of Mungerarie. On receipt of news of her illness, her sisters, Miss Ruth and Nurse Maud Collett, left to attend Mrs Clough. Since then the sad intelligence arrived that Miss Ruth had died on the 13th. Very deep sympathy is expressed for the aged mother, sisters and brother in the bereavement of two members of their family within ten days.
OBITUARY. – The death of Mrs. Margaret Heffernan, who died at her residence, Moggendoura, on Wednesday, removed one of the most highly respected and revered personages of this district. The deceased was born at Candelo 78 years ago, and was a daughter of the late Mr. John Collins of Candelo. Her husband was killed 16 years ago in a coach accident at Bega. She had resided at Moggendoura for the past 40 years, a short period of that time having been spent at Gundary. Mrs. Heffernan had not enjoyed good health for a number of years, having suffered from an affection of the heart and for the past two or three weeks her death was hourly expected. She had the consolation in her declining hours of having the whole of her family, as well as her brothers and sisters gathered around her. Deceased leaves four brothers, Messrs. J. T., W. J., P. H. and James Collins of the “Oaks,” (Candelo), two sisters, Mesdames James Tarlinton, (Cobargo) and John Coman (Candelo), three sons, Messrs John, Edmund and Patrick (Moggendoura), and six daughters, Mesdames Cleary (Moss Vale), P. Heffernan (Candelo), P. J. Tarlinton (Cobargo), J. O’Reilly (Sydney), Sister Mary Borgia (of the Sisters of Mercy), and Nurse Margaret Heffernan, to all of whom we tender the deepest sympathy.
