Special Olympics basketball champs

A small band of Eurobodalla athletes played in the Special Olympics Leon Burwell Shield last weekend at The Snakepit in Wollongong on Saturday.

Special Olympics is a sporting organisation for people with an intellectual disability and the event was hosted over the 13th and Sunday 14th of August..

The weekend saw over 100 Special O basketballers from approximately 10 regions of the State meet to play 5 games over the 2 days.

The competition is well structured with four grades from A to D. Athletes from all the regions are placed in teams of similar abilities and skills, to compete again each other in their grade.

Representing the South Coast was Craig Mitchell playing in A grade, with his team placing 4th.

In the B Grade competition was Laurie Masterson with his team gaining second place.

Congratulations also go to Maddison Howard-Windley with her C grade team winning their section. In D Grade Liz Godwin was a member of a team that won their division whilst Oscar Geeves and Lochie Neilson’s team came 4th.

Kathy Godwin, Chair of South Coast Special Olympics said "It’s truly inspiring watching these athletes play, no matter what the level of ability. Each one gives his/her best and the teamwork and sportsmanship displayed is nothing short of spectacular."

"Our South Coast Special O group train in Moruya each Wednesday at 4:00 and new players are most welcome to come and join us." "Craig and Laurie will be playing in the NSW team at the National Games in Launceston in October".
