Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell revealed Mr Kelly reported "I contacted Mr Kelly after rumours swept Labor he may be going. He told me 'I haven’t made up my mind’ on his future and he would be doing so this week,” Mr Clennell said. It has been common knowledge that NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro would like to step up to federal politics and that senior liberals have encouraged the idea saying they would support him to run in Eden-Monaro which would indicate that they would not put up a Liberal Candidate. It is reported in the Australian that Liberal Senator Jim Molan, Senator for New South Wales would also consider contesting the seat if preselected Tweeting: "What is most important to remember for all NSW Liberal Party members in Eden-Monaro is that, under the constitution that is now in place, it is local branch members in a preselection plebiscite that decide who the Liberal candidate will be. This is a principle that I and many others fought for over a long period of time, and it is now enshrined in our constitution."
