A man has drowned after rescuing a teenager caught in a riptide yesterday afternoon.


About 1.30pm (Sunday 1 January 2023), emergency services were called to Bogola Beach, south of Narooma, following reports a man had been pulled unconscious from the water.


NSW Ambulance paramedics commenced CPR; however, the man died at the scene.


Police have been told the 45-year-old man went into the water and successfully rescued the 14-year-old boy, who was stuck in a riptide, before he became caught himself.


The man has since been identified as a serving NSW Police officer, who was off-duty at the time.


Local police have since commenced an investigation and will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.

Chief Executive Officer of Surf Life Saving NSW Steven Pearce said the man's actions saved the two boys.

"Heroically, he was able to assist the two boys out of danger, out of the rip, but he himself remained in the rip and submerged in front of witnesses," Mr Pearce said The The Canberra Times reported earlier today:

An off-duty police officer in his 40s drowned on an unpatrolled beach in Narooma on New Year's Day.

Lifeguards from Narooma Beach responded to an alert that a swimmer was caught in a rip at Handkerchief Beach at about 1.30pm on Sunday.

The man was recovered from the water in a patrol boat and paramedics performed CPR. Sadly, he was unable to be saved.
