Eurocoast Triathlon Club member Richard Jeffrey shows his class

Eurocoast Triathlon Club member Richard Jeffrey has again show his class, after stepping up to the Ironman 70.3 (half ironman) distance. Richard competed at the Cairns Ironman festival last weekend, the final event of the 2016-17 triathlon season.

Richard competed in the half Ironman distance event (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21.1km run) and finished a very impressive 2nd in his age group (60-64 years). His total race time was 4hrs 57.37, amazing considering that this was his first time competing at this distance. He finished some 10 minutes behind the category winner.

Richard has previously shown his ability at the shorter Olympic distance events, winning a number of events throughout the state, and also being the current age group World Champion in the Cross Triathlon (effectively an off road triathlon).

Much of Richard’s motivation for competing in this event was that his son, Luke, competed in the Ironman race at the same event. Luke finished in a very impressive time of 9:17:23, which placed him 3rd in his age group, and should see him achieve his aim of qualifying for the Ironman World Championship race held in Kona, Hawaii, in October.
