Shire-wide news extracts from the Moruya Examiner of 30 August 1919, provided by the Moruya & District Historical Society:
ILLNESS. – We are sorry to report that Mr. J. P. O’Reilly, while on a visit to Sydney, was taken to the Jenner Private Hospital suffering from pleurisy and pneumonia.
MILLET. – The cultivation of millet is now likely to become an important industry in this district, as a number of farmers have tried it and are quite delighted with the result of their test. This week Messrs. Ken Taylor and Harry Lavis have sent to the Moruya shipping agent about 15 cwt each of this valuable plant, and Mr. Chas. Stubbs about 6 cwt, all of splendid growth and excellent quality.
FAREWELL TEA. – The afternoon tea tendered by the Red Cross Society to Mrs. G. H. James, of “Lynwood,” prior to her departure from Moruya, was largely attended on Thursday afternoon. Apologies were received from Mesdames Quilter and Carter and Miss Boot. The tables which were very artistically arranged by Mrs. Jermyn and Miss I. Walter with sweet peas, violets and asparagus fern, were laden with delectable sandwiches and cakes. The President, Mrs. R. L. Dawson presided.
WEDDINGS. –
WILSON – BALL
On Monday morning last a very pretty wedding took place in the Sacred Heart Church, the Rev. Father McCormack officiating. The contracting parties were Mr. Jon Henry Wilson, of Sydney, and Miss Elsie Adelaide, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ball of Mullenderree. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in a gown of white crepe-de-chine and bridal wreath and veil. She carried a bouquet of freesias, sweet peas and maiden-hair fern. She was attended by her sister, Miss Rita Ball, who wore a frock of cream voile and hat to match. Mr. Glynn Ball (brother of bride) acted as best man. After the ceremony the party adjourned to the residence of the bride’s parents, where a sumptuous repast was partaken of, after which the bride and bridegroom left by Hanscom’s special car en route for Sydney, their future home.
CONNELL – RYAN
A charming wedding was solemnised at the Sacred Heart Church, Moruya, on Thursday morning by the Rev. Father McCormack. The sun shone with all its brilliancy on the pretty “Queen of the Allies” of Bateman’s Bay, the day being a perfect one for the nuptials of Miss Evelyn Catherine, eldest daughter of Mr. M. Ryan of Cullendulla, and Mr. Patrick , youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. T Connell, of Moruya. The bride, who was given away by her brother (in the absence of her father), looked sweet in her gown of white crepe-de-chine and georgette, embroidered with seed pearls. Her mob cap and lovely veil was encircled with a wreath of orange blossoms. She also wore a diamond ring (gift of the bridegroom) and carried a sheaf of arum lilies and asparagus fern, with streamers of pink and white tulle. She was attended by Miss Ethel Ryan (sister) and Miss Mollie Higgins (cousin), who were daintily frocked on white voile and filet lace, with champagne hats. After the ceremony an adjournment was made to the Royal Hotel, where Mrs. Carden in her usual faultless style had the dainty wedding breakfast in readiness, the handsome wedding cake from Mr. P. J. Mylott’s bakery establishment centreing the many delectable sweets. Mr. and Mrs. Connell left per special motor for Eden, the bride travelling in a nigger brown crepe-de-chine with hat of georgette to match.
NERRIGUNDAH. – (From our Correspondent).
Jessop Bros. have crushed 15 tons at the local battery for a return of 13 dwts per ton.
Syd. Lake is cleaning up a trial crushing of a ton from his new reef. The result is not yet known.
Twenty 100 years ago booklets containing articles for the years 1899 to 1918 are available ($5 ea) from the Society’s rooms.
