Planning Under Way For Safety Improvement Work On Princes Hway @ Tomerong

Plans for a safety upgrade at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Island Point Road at Tomerong are now under way.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government is investing $5 million for planning and work to build a roundabout at the intersection to improve safety for road users and reduce the likelihood of crashes.

“This intersection provides access to St Georges Basin and Sanctuary Point, both popular South Coast tourist destinations which have high traffic volumes during the holidays,” the spokesperson said.

“In the five years to October 2016, there were 36 crashes resulting in 45 injuries.”

In early 2017 Roads and Maritime Services sought feedback from the local community on the intersection, which resulted in several upgrade options being considered.

“Following community consultation an options assessment and traffic modelling were carried out and identified a roundabout with a free-flowing northbound lane was the most suitable design option,” the spokesperson said.

“The installation of a roundabout at this intersection will help reduce the severity and number of crashes, manage approaching speeds, reduce queue lengths and improve traffic flow.

“Traffic calming, line marking, improved signs and increased lighting will also be installed at the intersection as part of the project.”

Survey and geotechnical work is currently being carried out to help better understand the environment and underground utilities at the intersection.

The community will have a further chance to have their say when an REF is put on display in 2019.
