The Kings Highway Road Safety Partnership has launched a new campaign encouraging drivers to slow down on the Kings Highway.

ACT Policing and the NSW Police Force will together target speeding and drug and alcohol impaired drivers and urge motorists to be aware of speed limits along the highway.

Eurobodalla Shire Council is a partner in the initiative and has erected banners urging motorists to slow down.

Council’s road safety officer Heidi Hanes said the banners served as an urgent reminder for drivers to be extra vigilant on the roads this summer.

“Statistics tell us that speeding continues to be the leading cause of crashes on the Kings Highway,” she said.

“In the past 12 months, there were 1,271 road deaths on Australian Roads. This is a 5.2 per cent increase compared to the previous year.”

Far South Coast Highway Patrol Sergeant Angus Duncombe said police want travellers to reach their destination safely by slowing down, being patient, driving to the conditions and taking regular breaks.

“We know that summertime sees an increase of cars on the Kings Highway, which means we have to be patient and allow extra time when travelling from Canberra to the South Coast,” he said.

“With the introduction of this campaign you’ll see an increase in patrols along the Kings Highway with police using marked and unmarked police vehicles to enforce speed limits.

“If you speed, you will get caught.”

The Kings Highway Road Safety Partnership formed eight years ago, with the aim of reducing road trauma on the Kings Highway. Members include Eurobodalla, Queanbeyan-Palerang and Shoalhaven councils, ACT Policing, NSW Police, Roads and Maritime Services and the ACT Government.
