This is No ordinary Garbage Bin

If you’re out about on Batemans Bay’s Clyde River foreshore, you might notice a pretty flash looking bin across the road from Bridge Plaza.

It’s not just eye-catching, it’s smart too! The rubbish receptacle can take five times more waste than a normal bin as it includes an internal solar-powered compactor. As waste collects inside, an infrared “eye” senses when it is filling and triggers a compaction cycle.

ESC installed the bin as part of a trial in one of the shire’s biggest litter hotspots – and one of the most concerning, as litter commonly blows from the ground straight into the Clyde River and to the ocean.

ESC hopes its distinctive design will catch the attention of would-be litterers who will stow their waste in the bin, rather than trashing our beautiful area and marine environment.

Public litter bins by numbers:

632 litter bins throughout the shire

$500,000 a year servicing them

617 tonnes of litter collected last year

Seven empties per bin, per week in main towns in peak season

44,786 bin empties in 14-week peak season

122,000 public litter bin empties every year across the shire
