Winning weed finder

Eurobodalla Council’s online weed finder has taken out the Invasive Species Management Award at yesterday’s Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Awards.

Launched by Council’s environment team in January, the tool enables users to enter key characteristics of a weed - such as branch structure, leaf shape, flower and fruit colour - and search results from a database of more than 100 commonly found weeds in Eurobodalla backyards.

It matches possible weeds and provides information on each, including plant description, habitat, dispersal and control methods.

The weed finder is mobile-friendly, meaning users can take their phone or tablet with them into the garden and compare plants to the photos in the finder.

Use the finder on the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens website at www.erbg.org.au/weeds.php or search ‘Eurobodalla Weed Finder’.

Web coordinator Ian Edwards (left) developed the application and invasive species supervisor Paul Martin conceived the idea and made it happen with the help of students and trainees who entered the data and categorised the plants.
