Do you have an apron with a story to tell?
The Old Courthouse Museum, Batemans Bay, is currently curating an exhibition entitled "The Apron as Art" and is asking for reader's contributions.
Aprons themselves, memories of aprons purchased or made, all are very welcome.
Pictured below is society member Merrie Hamilton, with an apron from her personal collection. This one was sewn from a hessian sugar sack,stamped 'Colonial Sugar Refinery, Sydney, 70lbs pure cane sugar' on the reverse. The original owner neatly trimmed the coarse edges with floral fabric and added a pocket and strings.
From the practical to the purely pretty - museum curator Myf Thompson fondly recalls her mother in the early 1950s, exchanging her wrap round kitchen apron for a flighty little starched and ruffled organza number to welcome guests for an evening drink. Items will be dolly-pegged out on a mock washing line, and memories and photos will expand the story.
The volunteer-run museum invites contributions of memories, photos or actual aprons, dropped in to the Old Courthouse in Museum Place, between 10am and 3pm, Tues/Wed/Thurs.
