  • “Artistic Diversity” Exhibition

“Artistic Diversity” Exhibition Two well known members of Creative Arts Batemans Bay Inc, (CABBI), namely Pam Edwards and Denise Luke will be showcasing their art at Bungendore Fine Art Gallery for the months of September and October, 2017. The exhibition, “Artistic Diversity” relates to the diverse subjects, media and styles Denise and Pam use in their artwork, but at the same time displaying a cohesive and creative compatibility. Both artists present a clean, vibrant palette in their paintings. After a career in marketing and computer graphics Pam Edwards of Long Beach began painting full time in 2003. Pam says she likes to focus her art on fusing abstract ideas with images of nature, using colour, texture, line and shape to convey her interpretations of the land and the sea. She enjoys the challenge of concentrating on abstract ideas to capture the “essence” of the subject, at the same time allowing the viewer to see some realism in her art. Denise Luke of Moruya, has two passions, art and motorsport. She says art started at a very early age, and has continued all her life. One of her creative highlights, whilst working as a pit lane marshal at motorsport events, was the opportunity to paint a portrait of the late Peter Brock, which he gladly signed. Denise says her love of birds, lizards and outback Australia feature in many of her paintings. She enjoys painting both realistically and in the abstract form. Come along and meet Denise and Pam at the official opening at Bungendore Fine Art Gallery on 2nd September between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. #Arts #whatson #Weekly

  • The Apron as Art exhibition @ the Old Courthouse Museum, Batemans Bay

The Apron as Art exhibition will be curating an exhibition entitled "The Apron as Art" opening on August 8th. Well know local potter Merrie Hamilton has a wonderful collection of aprons and has bought together a fun display from her personal collection and those contributed for the exhibition. One of her favourites is a well loved one sewn from a hessian sugar sack, stamped 'Colonial Sugar Refinery, Sydney, 70lbs pure cane sugar' on the reverse. The original owner neatly trimmed the coarse edges with floral fabric and added a pocket and strings. From the practical to the purely pretty - museum curator Myf Thompson fondly recalls her mother in the early 1950s, exchanging her wrap round kitchen apron for a flighty little starched and ruffled organza number to welcome guests for an evening drink. Items will be dolly-pegged out on a mock washing line, and memories and photos will expand their stories. The exhibition can be viewed from August 8th to September 27th - Tues/Wed/Thurs 10am-3pm and second Sunday of the month 10-1pm. #Arts #whatson #Weekly #BatemansBay #BBayHistory

  • “We have the money” Moruya RSL told

A smaller-than-usual meeting of Moruya RSL Sub-branch on Tuesday received some big news. Acting chairman Rob Griffiths told them: “We have the money!” He was referring to the sub-branch fund-raising for replacement of the roof reaching its target, with a little to spare, with contributions now totalling $183,430. The sub-branch decided a couple of years ago that the roof of the Moruya RSL Memorial Hall needed replacing; it had some leaks and was, above all, of corrugated asbestos. An estimate for the job of $180,000 was received and fund-raising begun. Mr Griffith told members he would be seeking a meeting with Eurobodalla Shire Council next week to advise it that the money was in hand to begin the work. “The idea is to get it started as soon as possible, it will take a month or two,” he said. Members agreed to the formation of a small Restoration Committee to, among other things liaise with the Council. Among decisions it will have to make will be who will call for tenders. Some members said the Council might be best “they are better at that sort of thing”, but the Sub-branch might decide to do that itself. Council has offered to do $10,000-worth of administration work in the project. Cash donations have been: Moruya Sub-branch $50,000; The NSW Government $60,000; Ron Millikin, of Ulladulla, $15,000; Narooma Sub-branch $1,000; Merimbula Sub-branch $750; Bombala Sub-branch $500; and advised only last week, the Veterans’ Affairs Department $55,930. • Heritage and Tourism go by the wayside as Moruya's rich history dims

On April 23rd, 2013 a report to the ordinary meeting of Eurobodalla Council advised councillors of a proposal presented by Mr Norman Moore for a sculptural work/ monument to recognise and commemorate the blacksmith James Gee and his forge on Vulcan Street. The proposed work is made by artist, Mr Bryan Carrick in collaboration with Mr Moore and had been requested to be located it in Russ Martin Park, Moruya. Council’s Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) considered the proposal and decided not to recommend that the proposal for the local history project not be accepted by Council. The PAAC said that they had considered the proposal in accordance with the requirements of the Public Art Policy and considered that the proposal did not meet the guidelines in relation to the diversity, location and maintenance requirements. "With respect to diversity, the proposed work does not contribute to diversifying the region’s collection. "Mr Carrick’s respected work is featured extensively in Moruya and in other locations throughout the Shire. It was considered that region had sufficient examples of his work within the collection. "With respect to location, the placement of the proposed sculptural work/monument in Russ Martin Park was not deemed appropriate by the PAAC. Concern was raised with the size of the work and its potential to clutter the public space. "With respect to maintenance, the PAAC was concerned with the expense to Council for long term maintenance and potential vandalism. "There would be costs related to the installation of the work and in its ongoing maintenance. There is no proposed cost to Council for the work itself. They concluded that the PAAC recognised the extraordinary level of commitment of Mr Moore and the artist towards the telling of Moruya’s history. The report to councillors said that "after much discussion and deliberation the PAAC agreed that the work does not support the guiding principles of the policy. It was considered that the proposed work is not suitable and did not contribute to a diverse collection of public art in Eurobodalla. The recommendation was that Council not accept Mr Moore’s proposed sculpture of James Gee. In February 2017 Norm Moore returned to the Council Chambers and let go a volley. (You can read Norm's presentation to Council here) Norm voiced his disappointment of the dismissive and ill informed heritage staff, the equally disinterested councillors on the heritage committee (at the time) and the total ignorance by Council as a whole of two considerable community petitions containing 600 and then a further 1000 signatures in support of the project. Today The Beagle met up with Norm to see where the James Gee project was up to and to hear his dreams of seeing Moruya embracing its history, far beyond the granite facade of the Sydney Harbour bridge, teaching its students about the early community of Moruya that achieved so much more. Above: Norm Moore is passionate about the history of Moruya and is flummoxed with the disinterest shown by the Eurobodalla Council Heritage Committee to apply itself to even the simplest of measures to promote and showcase the history of the town. #MoruyaHistory #History #Opinion #Council #LocalStateFederal #latest #Weekly #normmoore
