The cost of beginners is $30 per workshop. Our 1st beginners- Landscape with Eric Strachan is however already completely booked (but we hope to repeat this again later in year). Those wishing to add names should do so as soon as possible to the growing list. Reminder to artists, that final submission date for your entry into the National Pastel Open Exhibition is Friday 2 March, 2018. Details can be found on our website. First Society meeting for year will be on 6th February 10.15am at the Tomakin Sports & Leisure Club and we will also incorporate an information session on photographing your art work. For all information about the Society or to become a new member go to our website www.southcoastpastelsociety.com, like us on Facebook, email southcoastpastelsociety1@gmail.com or contact Nina Poulton on 0409037571 Above: Dani Williams with her work titled “Sirens Three” Award winning Moruya artist Dani Williams work take on a strong abstract/contemporary interpretation of landscape/seascape featuring strong colour, movement and line. More recently her subject matters are more of a whimsical and fantasy nature. Dani originally from Lake Bolac in the western district of Victoria developed a lifelong love of art, music and all things theatrical and went on to complete her Batchelor of Arts in Art History, Music & Drama. She sang professionally in various bands and theatre productions throughout Vic, NSW & ACT. In between teaching and raising 5 children which allowed her little time to pick up paint brushes, so she found pastels an easy medium, rich in colour, tactile and satisfying her artistic need. She and her husband moved to the South Coast 14 years ago and has been a Pastel Society member ever since. She has also been actively involved with community associations and inaugural Granite Town Music Festival & Riverlights projects. Her unique works are found locally and nationally and will form part of this exhibition. #Arts #Weekly #whatson #BatemansBay #Community #Paper

- Fire And Figure Studies For Art Exhibition @ SoART Narooma
Artist Samantha McLeod found inspiration from the devastation of bush fires for an exhibition of her work to be seen at the SoART, Narooma gallery opening on January 12. Samantha, who majored in fine arts for her Bachelor of Creative Art and Design from Charles Sturt University in Wagga, remembers vividly the many times she made the one hour drive from her home in Tumbarumba to Wagga after the fires had swept through the area. Above: Artist Samantha McLeod, from Tumbarumba, will show human form studies in graphite like the one shown here, as well as a collection of abstract images of bush fire devastation. “I saw both horror and beauty and I wanted to express my feelings for the land and landscape as an abstract narrative,” she said. However, Samantha’s exhibition at SoART will not be confined to the bush fires. Contrasting with the stark images of fires will be examples of the artist’s fine drawing techniques featuring studies of the human form. They include some arresting graphite drawings. Samantha McLeod began her art studies at the Australian National University and also studied print making at Griffith University in Brisbane. Her work has been seen at the State Library of Queensland and at Wagga Wagga’s Gallery 43. She lives in Tumbarumba, where she works as a student administration officer at the Tumbarumba Primary School. Her art studio at her home is surrounded by two acres of bush and includes the historic Tumbarumba water reservoir which attracts a variety of water birds all year round. The SoART Gallery exhibition will be open for ten days from Friday, January 12. #Arts #whatson #Narooma #Weekly

- Gallery Bodalla next exhibition announced
Gallery Bodalla’s upcoming exhibition features wonderful paintings by Jennifer Taylor and Cheryl Davison and beautiful glass works by Jenni Kemarre Martiniello. The show commences Thursday 14 December and will be opened by Helen Maxwell at drinks with the artists on Saturday 16 December at 3pm with music by guitarist Geoffrey Potter. Jennifer Taylor spends time between Alice Springs and Cuttagee near Bermagui. Working in oils, she paints with a deep respect and warmth for country, expressed with excellent tonality. The result is beautiful and strong paintings that capture the changing light and caring connection she feels with the land. “These paintings are of places with which I feel closely connected – home-places – in Aotearoa/New Zealand, Yuin country around Bermagui, and Arrernte country, Central Australia. Plein air painting is the basis of my painting practice. This involves seeking permission from traditional owners, to camp and paint in their country. I don’t think of these as wild places at all. They are contained by patterns of relatedness, care and responsibility. Every one of them is home to some-one,” Jennifer said. Much loved South coast Aboriginal artist Cheryl Davison lives in Tilba at the foot of Gulaga mountain, where she gains a lot of inspiration for her practice. Working in acrylic and gouache Cheryl’s paintings are distinctly Aboriginal with a strong modern influence. She draws on stories told to her by family about the lands of her ancestors, the Wulbunja and Ngarigo peoples. “Painting for me is about never forgetting the past – to be proud of my heritage and culture. Aboriginal peoples today still grieve the loss of culture and country. It is through my art I am able to keep the South Coast stories alive”, Cheryl said. Jennifer and Cheryl are joined by contemporary urban Aboriginal (Arrente) glass artist Jenni Kemarre Martiniello from Canberra. Jenni’s works are inspired by and pay tribute to traditional weavers. “My aim is to provide recognition for these ancient cultural practices through the contemporary medium of glass, within the aesthetics of both. I have concentrated on the incredibly beautiful forms of traditional woven eel traps, fish traps, fish-scoops and dillibags, seeking to evoke the interplay of light and form found in those objects, and in so doing, create contemporary glass works which are objects of cultural as well as artistic significance,” Jenni said. These three outstanding artists will be at Gallery Bodalla from 14 December through to 14 January. All are welcome to opening drinks on Saturday 16 December at 3pm. Gallery Bodalla is open Thursday to Sunday 10.30am-4pm, in the heritage post office, 66a Princes Hwy, Bodalla. 0421 238 174 www.gallerybodalla.com.au #whatson #Arts #Bodalla #Weekly
