The second round of the Open Gender Pennant was a successful one for Tuross Head with both sides recording wins. The Grade 5 travelled to Moruya and recorded a comfortable victory while the Grade 7 had to wait until the last end (again!) before they scrapped home against Malua Bay.
In very hot conditions at Moruya , the three Tuross teams managed to stay in front throughout their matches. Jim Macklan, Rose Farrington, Marcel Kors and Bruce Lidbury had a very close battle on their rink. The sides went end for end with Tuross in the lead 8 – 7 after 11 ends. Tuross had the better of the next part of the game opening up the biggest margin of the match after 16 ends at 15 – 10. Moruya fought back over the last few ends but fell short with Tuross winning 17 – 14.
Peter Macdonald, Col Fletcher, Geoff Lee, and Denise Lidbury survived a late scare in their game. They dominated the first three quarters of the game in a relatively low scoring affair. They won 12 of the first 15 ends to be in the lead 18 – 4. Over the next tree ends Moruya closed the gap to 18 – 12 to put themselves in with a chance. However, Tuross held firm and closed out the game 21 – 14.
Doreen Monks, Noel Downie, Irene Macdonald and John Monks also dominated their rink. They won 11 of the first 15 ends to lead 18 – 5. To their credit Moruya never gave up and won 5 of the last 6 ends, including scoring 5 shots on the last end, to make the final score a respectable 21 – 16 in the favour of Tuross Head.
The final aggregate score was Tuross 59 to Moruya 44. With Tuross winning all three rinks they had a 10 – 0 points win.
For the second week in a row, the Tuross Grade 7 side had to wait until the 63rd end of their tussle with Malua Bay for the result to be decided! Thankfully, this week Tuross managed to be on the right side of the scoreboard. Tuross had the better of play on two of the three rinks while Malua Bay dominated the other.
Chris Coddington, Des Jackson, Michael Atkinson and Allan Etheredge combined very well to dominate their rink. Great lead bowling from Coddington and Jackson meant that Tuross had good bowls in the head on most ends. In fact by the 12th end they had set up a match winning lead of 22 – 5. However, they needed to kick on as the combined score on all three rinks is the key to pennants. Malua Bay steadied and won the next 5 ends to reduce the margin to 22 – 14. However, Tuross scored a crucial 5 shots on the 18th end which enabled them to record a final win of 29 – 16.
Bill Burch, Di Newell, Di Challice and Lorraine Bird had fluctuating fortunes in their game. Malua Bay had a narrow 6 – 3 lead after 7 ends before Tuross won the next 5 ends to lead 12 – 6. Then it was Malua Bay’s turn to have the better of play so by the 15th end the scores were 12 all. Tuross scored 5 shots on the 16th end to regain the lead only to see Malua Bay return the favour on the 19th end so that with two ends to play Tuross had a slender lead of 19 -18. The 20th end of this game was a key turning point for the whole game. Tuross was able to score 6 shots and, despite losing the last end, they were able to win 25 – 20.
In the final game the Tuross side of Michael Challice, Carol Williams, Lorraine Johnson and Doug Williams found the going tough against their Malua Bay opponents. After 16 ends Malua Bay lead 26 – 10 and with just two ends to play they were in front 31 – 12. At this stage the other two games had finished and Malua Bay had a narrow 67 – 66 advantage on the ‘big board’. On the 20th end Carol Williams managed to trail the jack into the ditch with her bowl next to the jack. This unbeatable bowl gave Tuross the end and the scores were locked at 67 all. The last end would decide the game!! Tuross was able to have the better of this end and managed to score 2 shots to record a 69 – 67 win.
Malua Bay won this final rink 31 – 15 but Tuross won the overall match 9 – 1.
Next week the Grade 5 play Braidwood at home while the Grade 7 travel to Moruya.
