Kings Highway reopened to traffic at Batemans Bay

The Kings Highway at Batemans Bay has reopened to all road users after repairs were completed following bushfire damage.

Transport for NSW Regional Director Southern, Sam Knight, said Transport for NSW and the Eurobodalla Shire Council and multiple stakeholders have worked around the clock to carry out necessary work.

“The highway is an important link that connects western NSW and Canberra to the East Coast and has now been re-opened since mid-afternoon,” Ms Knight said.

“The safety work carried out since the closure on Friday 6 December included repairs to guardrails and an upgrade to the road surface.

“Safety always comes first. However, we thank all those who have been impacted for their patience.”

This follows the reopening of the lift span of the Batemans Bay Bridge which closed for eight days to allow continued road access for emergency vehicles and essential supplies.

Ms Knight said we acknowledge the Batemans Bay area is a hot stop for tourism at time of year and the reopening of the Kings Highway has been a top priority.

“Batemans Bay is ‘open for business’ and the community welcomes holiday makers to the region.

“Those travelling on the highway should take care and look out for displaced wildlife in the area.”

Monaro and South Coast Police Districts will have a number of police vehicles patrolling the area heading into the weekend.

Back burning activities to reduce further bushfire risks near the Kings Highway are continuing.

Motorists should continue to exercise caution, and follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews.
