Chris Laursen and Ukraine crisis : one of our locals making a real difference

Many in the Eurobodalla know Chris Laursen

Chris is well known in the Eurobodalla as a member of the band “The Ambassadors” and a previous band “The Ginger Mist”.

Quietly and unassumingly and without any fanfare, Chris has made it a personal mission to help out where his skills, as a medic, moulage trainer and first aid trainer, can be put to good use.

Chris went to Poland helping with refugees from the Ukraine crisis. His trip there has been funded with a local “Go Fund Me” initiative.

Using funds raised locally, Chris has already raised $15,400 Chris says "As we all watch the horror of events unfolding in the Ukraine, I am moved to try to do something to help. I have successfully crowd funded the supply of Individual First Aid Kits (IFAKs) to Anti Poaching Units in the past and now want to do the same to help the Ukrainian people.

"The IFAKs will each contain a range of haemorrhage control devices such as various wound dressings, bandages, wound packing gauze, a tourniquet and a thermal blanket. These are all proven life saving supplies that can be used by just about anybody.

The IFAKs will be vacuum packed to make the compact to carry and to keep the supplies within clean for use."

"Each IFAK will cost me $30 AUD to make.

"I want to do this directly to avoid the top heavy NGOs that often take up all the donations in running costs, wages, etc and also to avoid unscrupulous middlemen on the ground.

Chris has also sponsored a family escaping from the crisis and has paid for their accommodation in Poland pending their transfer to Canada. He has been personally helping other refugees with food and blankets and has despatched first aid equipment into Ukraine as well as helping an orphanage with supplies, assisted with receiving refugees into Poland and even supported an animal rescue shelter dealing with the pets that have been displaced.

This isn’t the first time Chris has pitched in during a crisis. He has made several trips to Africa to train the Rangers who protect animals from poachers. He teaches them first aid in a situation where there is real risk of injury and death.
