In support of Corrigans - a request for Council to listen

Dear Councillors and Council staff,

In consideration of the needs of the off-leash dog owners and their pets (to be located in an easily accessible area), I strongly support using the Corrigans’ Beach Reserve beside the caravan park.

I am very familiar with the area at Mundarra Way Surfside and it is in a very out-of-the-way location for most dog owners in Bateman’s Bay. When seeking alternate sites to Melaleuca Park for a building for Muddy Puddles last year, we were told that area – so suitable for such an establishment, being beside a disability-friendly school – was earmarked for a running track. Now it is being considered for a fenced dog off-leash area. Seems most strange.

The Corrigans’ Beach Reserve is adjacent to the Council owned ‘pet friendly’ caravan park and is an area out of the way of general traffic, beautifully associated with a park that offers a range of family amenities, varying with the seasons and the month- from markets to carnivals to the new disability playground. What is there not to like about the venue for an off- leash area? Undulating ground to provide good exercise; access to the beach, as allowed; clear visibility, and available parking.

As our demographic gets older, a close and accessible site will become more and more important to residents. Maybe we need one on both sides of the river?

I understand close to 1,500 people from Batemans Bay (the bulk of them from the Batehaven/Catalina/Sunshine Bay area) petitioned council to establish a dog park with the preferred site being Corrigans Beach Reserve, NOT an out of the way location.

Lets listen to them and grant their request.

regards

Dr Susan Mackenzie
