Vale MAGGIE: the little dog savagely mauled on Malua Bay beach hoping to escape the fires

Malua Bay evacuation on New Years Eve

As one of the horror-struck evacuees huddled on Malua Bay beach, I wish to express my great admiration and gratitude for the efforts of the members of that Surf Life Saving Club for their marshalling and support to keep things organised on the day and since.

I could only assume that it was something they had rehearsed during training - but was later assured by a club official that this was not the case.

Families watching the emerging holocaust to the west, included people and pets.

When we leashed our little fox terrier and took her down to the sand, from our vehicle, as advised, we did not think for a moment that other pet owners would not do likewise.

A large blue heeler dog, not on a leash, attacked our beloved pet and savaged it so badly that later in the day, she had to be put down, as she was in agony and according the Caseys Beach Vet, she could not possibly survive.

Yes, pets are family too - we need to know where all members of the family are at all times during such stressful events.
