Tuross Head Men’s Bowls

It has been another busy week for Tuross bowlers with further play in the Club’s Major Singles Championship and the completion of Round 4 of the State Pennants. It was a successful round of Pennant play with both sides recording victories. The Grade 5 side travelled to Moruya and had a very tight game. In the finish Tuross won two of the three rinks and scrapped home overall by 61 shots to 57 as Moruya almost snatched victory with a very strong finish. Tuross scored 9 points to Moruya’s 1.

The Grade 6 side were at home to Narooma and chalked up their first win of the year. Alan Skelton, Di Challice, Ben Hewison and Carol Williams led the way with a convincing 28 – 8 win on their rink. Allan Etheredge’s team finished strongly to grab a 29 – 20 win. Ray Downey’s side faltered after a fast start to go down 32 – 24. Tuross won overall by 81 shots to 60 giving them 9 points to Narooma’s 1.

Next week the Grade 5 side are home to Malua Bay while the Grade 6 side travels to Malua Bay.

The final matches of round 1 and the quarter finals of the major singles championship have now been completed. Peter Macdonald dominated the early stages of his round 1 clash with Bruce Lidbury and led 16 – 7 before Lidbury stormed back into the match. After 24 ends Lidbury grabbed the lead at 22 – 21. The players then traded the lead until they reached 25 all. Lidbury then pulled away to win an excellent game 31 – 25.

Michael Atkinson proved too good for an out of sorts Alan Skelton and won their game 31 – 12.

The quarter final matches produced some exciting games with two of our newer players forcing their way into the semi-finals. Defending Champion, Noel Downie, kept his title hopes alive with a classy 31 – 13 win over Michael Atkinson. Joel Hilliard had the better of Alan McLeod for most of their game but had a fright win McLeod closed to within two shots at 18 – 16. Hilliard was able to steady and he pulled away to win 31 – 20.

Marcel Kors (above) and Peter Davies had a great battle in a high quality match. Kors started well and moved to a 15 – 6 advantage before Davies slowly pegged him back. Shots were at a premium with most ends resulting in a 1 or 2 shot result. Davies narrowed the deficit to 15 – 17 but Kors wasn’t to be denied and he slowly but surely made his way into the semi- finals with a 31 – 18 victory.

Mick Challice (above) was as equally impressive in his game with Bruce Lidbury. This game followed a similar pattern with Challice starting well and setting up a 16 – 8 lead before Lidbury slowly clawed his way back into the match. It was anyone’s game when Challice’s lead was cut back to 20 – 19. Like Kors, Challice steadied and claimed an excellent 31 – 23 win.

Kors and Challice are two of our newer bowlers and it is great to see them make their way into the semi-finals of the premier championship event. Kors will play Hilliard while Challice takes on Downie.
