The October/November 2020 issue of ‘Recollections’, the South Coast’s free history magazine, is now available at www.bit.ly/Recollections24
As usual, it includes numerous interesting stories about the local area.
The lead story is about the heritage listed Batemans Bay vertical lift Bridge that, despite its heritage listing and heritage value, will be ‘become history’ in a year or so.
The heritage significance of Innes’ Boatshed and Jetty at Batemans Bay, which has officially been dismissed as ‘unsophisticated, cheap and functional’, is also explained.
And then there is the fascinating story of Charles Harpur who was Australia’s first native-born poet, and a man who Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating strongly suggested should also be honoured as Australia’s first republican. He lived and is buried in Eurobodalla – his final resting place today, somewhat shamefully for the Shire, being very sadly neglected.
The significant contribution that the Moruya & District Historical Society has made to our local community over the past 50 years is also described.
And that’s less than half of what’s included in this informative issue of ‘Recollections’!
Paper copies of the magazine should become available this coming week from all Eurobodalla libraries and from the numerous other regular distributors throughout the Shire.
