New $20m aquatic centre with 50m water-polo pool proposed for Sutherland Shire

ArchitectureAU Editorial reports:

A $20.4 million, 19-metre-high water polo and aquatics centre is proposed to be built on a narrow strip of land connecting Sutherland shire to the Kurnell Peninsula, under plans submitted to the local council.

To be operated by the not-for-profit Sharks International Water Polo Academy, the venue would host local, regional, state and national water polo competitions, as well as facilitating training and education. It would include a 50-metre pool and seating for around 1,000 spectators, along with an exercise physiology suite, classrooms, offices and other ancillary spaces.

It is understood that there will be 127 car parking spaces, an access road and 20 bicycle parking spaces.

Originally, it was proposed the aquatic facility would include a 25-metre outdoor warm-down pool as well as an indoor pool, however, the outdoor pool has been scrapped because of site constraints much like the 50m pool idea for the Mackay Park

The development application says the centre will provide recreation opportunities for community groups, fitness and healthy lifestyle programs, training for local water polo teams, elite athlete training programs and regional competitions.
