Disabled Yacht Assisted in South Coast Rescue

Marine Rescue Bermagui rescue boat BM30 today (April 20th 2022) assisted a 12 metre white motor cruiser into Bermagui Harbour after its motor failed in light winds off Merimbula.

The yacht was making its way northwards along the NSW coast from Tasmania when it became becalmed in light winds earlier this week. Unable to get its motor started, the yacht with its two passengers managed to get to Horseshoe Bay where parts were ordered and it waited for a berth to become available at Bermagui Harbour.

This morning the yacht was met by rescue vessel Bermagui 30 and towed to the harbour, before being rafted up against Bermagui 30 and carefully placed on the available mooring. Rafting involves lashing the two vessels together to permit more controlled manoeuvring in confined spaces such as the tight confines of Bermagui Harbour.

Having been delivered to its berth, the yacht will undergo repairs before resuming its journey.

Ahead of the busy ANZAC Day long weekend, Marine Rescue Commissioner Stacey Tannos has asked boat owners to carefully check their engine and battery before heading out on the water, and to also ensure that they have plenty of fuel for their journey and are carrying the correct safety equipment such as lifejackets, EPIRB, V-sheet and flares.
