Constance Must Stand Down From Ministry Immediately

The NSW Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Special Minister of State Walt Secord said says that NSW Liberal frontbencher, Andrew Constance, Member for Bega, must stand down from the Berejiklian Ministry immediately to avoid "deep conflict" if he nominates for Eden-Monaro.

“In these highly unusual circumstances, it is a major conflict for a State Government minister to become a Federal candidate while making major decisions,” Walt Secord said.

Mr Secord made the statements after Deputy Premier John Barilaro withdrew from the contest – opening the way for State Bega MP Andrew Constance to run.

Mr Constance is the fifth most senior member of the Berejiklian Government, as Transport and Roads Minister and Leader of the Government in the NSW Legislative Assembly.

“Technically, Mr Constance might be able to remain in the NSW Parliament until the writs are issued and other administrative activity related to the Federal by-election occurs, but he should not be allowed to be part of the decision-making process during the COVID-19 crisis, the drought and the bushfire recovery – all three issues which affects his electorate,” Mr Secord said.

“We are in extraordinary times. With government assuming extraordinary powers and measures on behalf of the community, therefore, he should not have the levers of State government at his disposal.

“Rather than seeking a new job, the Transport and Roads Minister should be devoting his energy to working for the families and businesses of NSW during this crisis.”
