Who are The New Savages?

The New Savages are a unique blues band. Imagine Jim Morrison singing primal, authentic blues music from the 1930’s before rock ‘n’ roll invented. Add a dash of rebellion and a country storytelling influence from Johnny Cash and you’re another step closer to understanding them.

The final ingredient to their sound is constraint. This is the entirety of their music, they only have two instruments to make all of that noise - an electric guitar and drums. But to The New Savages constraint is not a hindrance, it is a freedom. And because of this freedom, instead of just sounding like half of a band - they manage to sound bigger than a traditionally sized band.

What is Melbourne Hill Country Blues?

Fred McDowell was a blues-man who first recorded in 1959. He merged elements of tribal African music and the delta blues together to create a hypnotic, droning one-chord guitar style. This style of blues came to be known as Mississippi Hill Country Blues. It was so simple and groovy that you could dance to it, and at the same time it was so honest and pure that it could force you to sit down and just listen to it.

The New Savages are two musicians attempting to continue the revolution created by Mississippi Fred McDowell. Melbourne Hill Country Blues has a strong emphasis on rhythm, groove, and honesty.
