In their latest media statement local Wires lead with:
"Everyone loves their family pooch. Loveable. Affectionate. Loyal. But if you don’t have adequate vocal control on your dog, the local WIRES branch is asking people to keep their dogs on lead. We have had a spat of animals being attacked or chased by family canines.
"A few months ago a mother swan was chased into the ocean and so abandoned her cygnets to fend for themselves. Two were contained and brought into care by passerbyers. One was found the next day but due to stress and the harsh weather conditions did not survive. The last one fled and was never found. These cygnets were less than a week old and unable to fend for themselves.
"Then there was the dog that chased and attacked a female Eastern Grey Kangaroo into Tuross Lake with its owner watching on, showing no concern or effort to try and control the dog. The female kangaroo dropped her joey which other passerbyers were able to catch and keep safe. After the attack and the mother kangaroo swimming to the other side of the lake. The female was later located and luckily accepted her joey back.
Another dog chased a wallaby into barb wire fencing. The female was too injured and was euthanised and her joey was too young to survive without its mother.
Just over the long weekend A beautiful python was attacked and injured by a pet dog. Two female wallabies were chased and dropped their joeys. One was able to be kept warm overnight and luckily reintroduced and accepted by the female. The second one was brought into care.
WIRES attended over 350 rescues from July-August for all species. Of those 142 were macropod rescues. This unprecedented number of macropods over the last three months is most likely due to the drought which as food reduces in the bush, it brings them closer to humans, their dogs and roads.
Over 125 birds were rescued, 44 possums and gliders and 9 snakes were relocated.
