Work on the Princes Highway upgrade at Dignams Creek is on track to be completed mid-2019, weather permitting, with the project now 70 per cent complete.
Roads and Maritime Services has appointed Fulton Hogan to complete the upgrade after the previous contractor, York Civil, went into voluntary administration in August 2018.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government is funding the $45 million upgrade, which will improve safety and traffic efficiency by widening about 800 metres of the Princes Highway just south of Narooma and building a new two kilometre section of the road to current standards.
“The project remains on track, with a wildlife crossing recently completed under the new section of highway, providing a connection for local wildlife between two National Parks,” the spokesperson said.
Roads and Maritime has shown support to the local Aboriginal community as part of the project by employing three Aboriginal trainees.
“Each of these trainees will complete a certificate and finish with qualifications in civil construction,” the spokesperson said.
“These qualifications will support them in furthering their career in construction after this project is complete.”
Work for the remainder of the year will include completion of both the Dignams Creek and Dignams Creek Road bridges, the start of road paving and continued drainage work along the new alignment.
“Motorists are thanked for their ongoing patience and can be assured this upgrade is worth the wait. The community will be kept informed as work progresses towards completion,” the spokesperson said.
