NSW Parliament has passed the Smoke-free Environment Amendment Bill 2018 banning E-cigarette smokers from vaping in public places such as shopping centres, cinemas, libraries, trains, buses, public swimming pools, near children's play equipment, sports grounds, public transport stops and outdoor dining areas.
The new rules come into effect in July this year
“Put simply, where you are not allowed to smoke cigarettes, you now cannot vape either,” Health Minister Brad Hazzard said in a statement after the announcement.
“The NSW Government is acting now to protect vulnerable bystanders from passive exposure to vapour and if you snub these new laws you risk fines of up to $550"
It has long been suggested that the potential health risks from e-cigarette vapours are known to cause cancer as vapours can contain chemicals, toxins and metals
The Cancer Council of NSW has welcomed the ban.
Smoking is banned in all enclosed public places and certain outdoor public areas around NSW, under the Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 and the Smoke-free Environment Regulation 2016.
The new laws also force retailers to notify NSW Heath they are selling e-cigarettes.
