A special treat for EuroSCUG members at the August monthly meeting – their own John Allen gave a very professional and informative Power Point presentation entitled “Keeping Windows 10 Secure”.
John gave a brief outline of his very impressive career with computers, illustrating the advances in computing over the last 50 years. He has been involved in developing programmes for the census, music synthesisers, and websites. More recently, John has been involved in user-testing pre-release versions of Windows and Malwarebytes.
In his talk, John stressed the fact that security in Windows 10 is different from previous Windows systems. It operates securely with its own built in protection mechanisms, which are reinforced with each monthly update. Users can choose to keep things simple and not use 3rd party security applications In John’s words “Keep Windows updated, use Microsoft Edge Browser, stop using vulnerable apps, and don’t use registry cleaners or “driver update” apps.
Practice safe computing. Use strong passwords & 2 phase verification on your on-line accounts.” EuroSCUG is very lucky to have John, and several other volunteer computer gurus, as members.
They spend hours preparing presentations for the monthly meetings and local area groups and are always happy to help members. However, they all need to take a break occasionally, and the group would welcome new members who could fulfil these roles.
At the next EuroSCUG meeting, at Moruya Golf Club at 10am on Wednesday 6 th September, Guest Speaker Donna Lawrence from Eurobodalla Library Services will speak about the services provided by the three shire libraries, including basics, e-resources & the new RB digital app.
After morning tea, Donna will expand on library services with a small group. Other small groups will explore buying, selling and managing stocks and shares, basic photography with a smart phone, and editing photos.
A beginner’s group and help desk will also be available. EuroSCUG meets at 10am on the first Wednesday of the month at Moruya Golf Club, and local area groups meet regularly in Batemans Bay, Moruya, Tuross Head and Narooma.
