Adrift yacht located off Eden

A damaged yacht lost at sea earlier this month after the two sailors on board were rescued by police has been located off Eden.

About 3pm on Tuesday 7 March 2017, the yacht, affected by high winds and heavy swell about 210 nautical miles from Sydney, activated its EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon).

A rescue effort by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and the NSW Police Force was launched, and with assistance by a crew from a container ship. Sailors, Nick Dwyer and Barbra Heftman, were transferred to the NSW Police Nemesis vessel.

The sailors were safely returned to shore in Sydney, but the 40-foot yacht, which had been travelling from New Zealand to Australia, could not be recovered.

Early yesterday (Tuesday 28 March 2017), police were advised the yacht had been spotted about 10am, near Gabo Island near Eden, by the Sea Princess cruise ship.

Officers attached to the Marine Area Command assisted the owner of the yacht to locate the vessel and tow back to Australia.

The yacht was returned to its owner at 6am this morning.
