Articles in the local press prompted five outstanding nominations for the Moruya and District Citizen of the Year 2017.
The Australia Day Committee president Derek Anderson said, ‘It was heart-warming to see so many dedicated people helping the community.’
The committee had quite a task to choose between coaches, referees and organisers for basketball, soccer, little nippers and hockey teams that keep the young healthy. Or the fund raiser for hospital equipment that everyone needs at some time in their lives. But the safety service for boaters does a great job possibly saving lives. Then there was the lady who gives free guitar lessons to those who cannot pay, visits the sick and dying and supports anyone in need. But giving food to the hungry, clothing to the cold and entertain the elderly is also so worthy.
The diversity of good deeds reflects the different experiences and opportunities of the givers. Many giving a lifetime of contribution.
The 2017 Moruya District Citizen of the Year will be presented with a trophy at the friendly Moruya Australia Day celebration, 26th January, on the banks of the Moruya River around the rotunda in Russ Martin Park.
It starts with a BBQ breakfast, of course, at 8.30 am, with burgers, bacon, eggs or an Aussie taco – that’s a sausage in bread. Sculluccino provides excellent expresso and cake to the Lions and Rotary volunteers and guests.
The gentle tones and popular songs played by the LP duo provide a happy ambience as well as good listening.
The Moruya District Historical Society brings surprising gadgets and there’s a horse shoe throwing competition.
Last year a lady who brought along her dog was surprised to win the biggest pet prize. Some mice won the prize for the smallest. You or the kids may like to bring an unusual or best dressed pet or a decorated bike. There is free face painting for the littlies.
The Australian Army Cadet Corp will raise the flag while the national anthem plays. Christine Adams will make Moruyians feel their place in history with her speech about Quarry Park. And Bruce Reid, the 2016 Moruya Citizen of the Year, will welcome this year’s winner.
So there is plenty to see and do at this free community event.
